Let me explain it better, there are 4 kingdoms (water, fire, earth and air) and they used to live in harmony. However, the fire kingdom started a war and destroyed the air temple, killed everybody except this boy, Aang . Aang is also known as the Avatar, the powerful bender of all 4 skills that can bring peace to the world and end this war.
